Michaela Cunningham was born in Vancouver, grew up on Salt Spring Island and has been playing Concertina, Tin Whistle and singing for over 20 years. In her teens, she nurtured her passion for traditional music through listening to her Irish mother’s recordings and through frequent visits to Ireland, where she participated in summer music schools.
Her musical style is influenced by the County Clare region, on the West Coast of Ireland. Michaela was taught by a variety of Ireland's most renowned Concertina players most notably Mary MacNamara, Noel Hill, Tony O'Connell, Michael O' Raghallaigh. Michaela particularly attributes her earliest and most fundamental foundation to the wonderful playing that Mary MacNamara provided, a special methodology that includes 'feeling the tune' and 'playing from within'.
She eventually moved to Ireland to study and recently returned with a B.A. in Music and a Masters in Music Performance. Her Master's thesis explored the concertina playing of Paddy Murphy and his influence on Irish Concertina styles.
Michaela is also a graduate of Trinity College Dublin where she earned a postgraduate diploma in education, and she is a BC Certified Educator.
She has been involved in a number of recording projects and has played with Martin Hayes, Martin Tourish, Sharon Shannon, Kevin Crawford and many others.
Michaela resides in Vancouver, where she plays and teaches traditional Irish music. Now she is available to teach anyone, anywhere, anytime, online!
